Sam "Ace" Rothstein (Robert De Niro), who almost sealed his own doom when he fell for Vegas hustler Ginger McKenna (Sharon Stone) in 'Casino'. EVGENIA.

Watch the video. This Martin Scorsese film depicts the Janus-like quality of Las Vegas--it has a glittering, glamorous face, as well as a brutal, cruel one.

Ace Rothstein and Nicky Santoro, mobsters who move to Las Vegas to make their mark, live and work in this paradoxical world.

Seen through their eyes, each as a foil to the other, the details of mob involvement in the casinos of the 's and '80's are revealed.

Ace is the smooth operator of the Tangiers casino, while Nicky is his boyhood friend and tough strongman, robbing and shaking down the locals.

However, they each have a tragic flaw--Ace falls in love with a hustler, Ginger, and Nicky falls into an ever-deepening spiral of drugs and violence.

As a lifelong gambler who has crossed paths with a few fringe types portrayed in the film, I'm well aware of the story, the culture, and the ambiance of the Tangiers, the fictional casino placed in the control of Sam "Ace" Rothstein Robert Deniro.

Rothstein is not a mob member, but a "moneymaker" for them because he's the nation's best sports handicapper. It was refreshing for a movie to finally show that not all gamblers are stupid, but instead one of those who takes advantage of the many who are.

Rothstein's partner in crime is Nicky Santoro Joe Pesci , who is far less convincing as a mobster than he would seem to like to believe. Sharon Stone plays the psychotic Ginger, a once-in-a-lifetime role in that it was the only time in my life I could bear to watch her on film.

The supporting cast is strong, led by James Woods and Don Rickles excellent in his dramatic capacity , and the movie is generally well-acted.

If you are a gambler or know the "wiseguy" culture, the movie doesn't have to be explained, while if you aren't, you'll feel like you've stumbled upon the secret meeting place of the mafia and made privy to what is said, without anyone knowing you were there.

This film is based on the true story of what happened when the mob tried to put its men in suits and have them heading a casino, and why it has never been tried since.

The homage paid to the incestuous nature of Nevada politics was an excellent touch. The film's nod to how Vegas has been sanitized since those days is also accurate, and reflects sadness at a lost era, where the baby the "old school" types who made Vegas great was thrown out with the bathwater the organized crime influences.

It sounds weird; it is. Today, we have a broader terminology for this sort of subject matter — it would be classed as toxic masculinity or a real pig-headed, insecure machismo.

Scorsese revels in the luxury of Gilded Age New York, swapping the usual smoky streets and alleyways of the city for a world of crushed velvet, oil paintings and elbow-length kid gloves.

That swap worked, helped not inconsiderably by the considerable talents of its central trio, Daniel Day-Lewis, Michelle Pfeiffer and Winona Ryder.

One of the best films out there about how the obsessive drive to achieve something monumental can destroy a life, The Aviator charted the life and times of Howard Hughes, the businessman, film director and, yes, aviator.

Hughes sought to build ever faster and more capable aircraft and break flight records even as obsessive compulsive disorder began to dictate his life and his various high-profile relationships with Hollywood actresses, including Ava Gardner and Katharine Hepburn, deteriorated in the face of his compulsion.

It was the second Scorsese film to star Leonardo DiCaprio, a tour de force from the actor and arguably the film where their now decades-long collaboration really took root and began to flourish.

Nonetheless, it was a bold undertaking that took real courage to attempt Scorsese received death threats and there was even a fundamentalist Christian terrorist attack on a cinema showing the film in France.

That, in itself, is a pretty commendable artistic undertaking. Does Shutter Island have the best plot twist since the turn of the century? Balancing on the rusty knife edge between psychological thriller and out-and-out horror, with a dose of film noir thrown in for good measure, the film sees a detective in s New England travel to a remote island asylum to try to solve the case of a missing woman committed after drowning her own children.

Things quickly get as creepy as that synopsis makes them sound. Alice, played by Burstyn, drifts haplessly but inexorably across the southwest US, from New Mexico to Monterey, California, after her husband dies, taking on various odd jobs and encountering a decidedly mixed bag of s men in the process.

There are few films that capture pure and total isolation with nothing but faith for comfort like Silence. It was worth the wait; Adam Driver and Andrew Garfield are brilliant as the zealous young missionaries whose faith is tested as they are hunted through the misty, hardscrabble coastal villages of feudal Japan.

As we all learned from Goodfellas more on that later , the best films about criminals make you sympathise with them and pine ever so slightly for whatever it might be — the glamour, the thrill, the bank balance — about their life that appeals, before rudely pulling the wool from your eyes in the third act.

It is, appropriately enough for two hours of pure, hypermasculine greed porn, one of the most pirated films ever. Consider that payback for all those doltish lads who for a couple of months went around thumping their chests and growling.

At the same time, there are elements to it that seem timeless, at this point — it starred De Niro and Pacino and employed epic, multi-generation storytelling about the personal cost of crime.

Is it as good a gangster film as Goodfellas or The Departed? Maybe not, but it comes pretty damn close digitally de-aged De Niro struggling to curb stomp a man notwithstanding.

When the moustachioed leader of the Protestant gang, Bill The Butcher played with a touch of the absurd by an utterly terrifying Daniel Day-Lewis , knifes his dad to death in a mass brawl, young Leo sets out for revenge.
